WAR IN UKRAINE: October 6, 2022

The Ukrainian governor of Zaporizhzhya, said early on October 6 that shelling by Russian forces killed at least two people overnight, damaged or destroyed several residential buildings, and caused widespread fires.

  • Russian missiles hit residential buildings before dawn in Zaporizhzhia. At least two people killed, and others remain trapped under rubble, the regional governor says. Russian has not commented.

  • Russia "must be punished" for its missile attacks on the the southern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia, says Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba. The regional governor says a woman was killed and at least seven people, including a three-year-old, were wounded. Kuleba says overnight, seven Russian missiles hit civilians who were "sleeping peacefully at their homes", adding that more missiles have struck during the day. “Russians keep deliberately striking civilians to sow fear. Russian terror must be stopped - by force of weapons, sanctions, and full isolation," he said in a tweet.

  • Amid humiliating battlefield losses, the Kremlin will resort increasingly to scorched earth attacks, with civilians paying the price. Expect scorched earth tactics to be employed, similar to what’s been used on Mariupol and elsewhere.

  • President Zelensky says Ukraine's counter-offensive is continuing to gain ground, stating that Kyiv had taken back more villages. British Prime Minister Liz Truss is joining other leaders in Prague today for the first meeting of a new European "club of nations.” It is bringing together leaders of the 27 European Union states and 17 other European countries - BBC

  • New York Times: US believes Ukraine was behind killing of daughter of Russian ultra-nationalist. According to the New York Times, the U.S. intelligence agencies believe that “parts of the Ukrainian government authorized the car bomb attack” that killed Daria Dugina, the daughter of Russian imperialist Alexander Dugin on Aug. 20.   • President Joe Biden told Zelenskiy in a phone call that the United States will provide Kyiv with $625 million in new security assistance. The European Union has given its final approval to a new round of sanctionson Russia over its war against Ukraine.
